This is surprising since these extended keyboards do have the usual "special features" icons for brightness and volume printed on the F1, F2, F10, F11, F12 keys, and so forth, as well as the "F" numbers. It just appears that the extended USB keyboard is not being recognized as having "special features" available in relation to the function keys, or else the keyboard itself does not transmit information needed for such features. Note that I have turned off the wireless keyboard, and have also restarted the iMac after turning it off. If instead I use the smaller Apple wireless keyboard (tested with iMac only) or the built-in keyboard on either MacBook Pro, the brightness and volume functions work correctly.

I have the same problem with both and it occurs on all three Macs in the house, which includes an iMac (11,1) running 10.6.7, a MacBook Pro (4,1) running 10.5.8 and a MacBook Pro (1,1) running 10.5.8. I just purchased two new Apple (extended) USB keyboards. The following suggested approaches do not help. I've tried various solutions to similar problems posted in the past including an archived discussion from April 2009 which came the closest:

The volume function is fortunately at least still available via the menu bar. With all the searching I have done, on the Apple site and elsewhere, I have not found any other reference to this solution so maybe it will help someone. Note that toward the bottom I point out a solution for the "brightness" aspect of this problem.
